The most important industry is jewelry production, which has been a large segment of Rhode Island's ecomony for many years. The city is also known for making fine silverware.

The city has hundreds of mansions and villas built by the wealthiest families of America as their summer homes. As a result, Providence is known for its rare combination of the friendliness of a small town as well as the sophistication of a big city.

With its subtropical and humid continental climate, it attracts millions of tourists from all over the world. It's a popular place to visit because of the scenic beauty of the Providence River which eventually reaches the Narragansett Bay.

Providence has many eclectic shops, renowned restaurants, and high-end hotels. Locals and visitors enjoy its happening night life and various festivals, which are organized throughout the year.
