Providence Major Streets and Roadways

The city of providence is characterized by its haphazard streets therefore finding your way within the city can be challenging. Planning plays a very important role in navigating the streets of Providence.

The numbers of streets in Providence run into thousands and this is due to its massive population and various methods of numbering the streets. There is no particular distinction of streets into alleys or lanes and there is no organized numbering of the streets either. Each street is provided with a name which may have a historical significance or in respect to a famous person of the place.

There are two types of streets based on point of origin. Those that begin from the Market Square and radiate outwards are called the main or principle streets and the others that form a network connecting these main streets to others and neighborhoods are the minor streets. Generally, the main streets are where the large corporate centers and shopping centers are accessed from.

Each main street is ornamented with buildings both historic and new which gives the city a unique feel and elegance. At the end of some of the streets are the neighborhoods or lead into the suburbs. The city of Providence is linked to the other cities by interstate highways and a rail system that transports people from the north to the south of the city.
