Sacramento Major Streets and Roadways

Sacramento has opted for the traditional grid network to identify streets in an efficient and consistent manner. Sacramento River serves as the unofficial benchmark for numbering the streets. All roads to the east of the river are numbered consecutively starting with Front Street. All other roads progressively to the east are numbered as 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and so forth.

The city is divided into four grids by two intersecting freeways. The intersection does not take place near the city center and this is the reason why it causes irregular grids. There is two interstate freeways running from North to South and another one running from East to West. Interstate 80 passes through the eastern end of the western part of the city. An offshoot of this freeway, Interstate 80 Business cuts through the city from East to West.

Roads and streets running from East to West have been numbered based on their proximity to the Sacramento river. The roads running from North to South have been allotted alphabets. The street closest to the American river running to the North of the city is named as the B street. All southward streets are named progressively till the W street at the far southern end of the city.
