The Public Schools of San Diego City are operated by different independent school districts. The majority of Public schools in the area are served by San Diego unified School District operating 10 elementary schools, 24 middle schools, 28 high schools, 11 K-8 schools , 13 atypical and alternative schools along with 45 charter schools making it the second largest school district in the state of California. Apart from this, there are other school districts like Poway unified School District, Del Mar Union school District, Sweetwater Union High School District and San Dieguito Union High School District which are headquartered outside the San Diego city limits and also administer few of the schools within the city.
San Diego is ranked as the ninth most educated city in the United States. The city also has various public and private universities which also include a medical school, 3 ABA accredited law schools and an unaccredited law school, which are instrumental in providing the talent required to grow the economy of the city.
