Baltimore Demographics and Statistics

The Baltimore population (estimated to be around 620,000 in the 2010 census) has been decreasing steadily since the 1970's. In the early years, it was the second city (after New York) to reach the population of a 100,000. While the population in the city grew rapidly in the early years, it was been reported as the largest population loser (along with Detroit and Washington DC) in the 1990's.

It is estimated that the people of Baltimore live in slightly less than 300,000 homes or housing units. About 22 percent of the people are below 18 years of age and almost 12 percent are elderly at above 65 years of age.

The population of the city is primarily African American with 63 percent of the people being of that origin. The white percentage is about 33 percent.
