Private institutions include the College of Notre Dame of Maryland, the Peabody Institute of John Hopkins University, the Loyola University Maryland and the John Hopkins University itself.

The public institutions include the Baltimore City Community College, the Morgan State University, the Coppin State University and the University of Baltimore.

Schools in the city are operated and managed by the Baltimore City Public School System. The second oldest African America high school in the United States, the Frederick Douglass High School is situated here as is the Baltimore City College. The Western High School is probably the oldest high school that is an only girl's school that exists today.

The Baltimore City College has been nicknamed 'City' and the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute is also often called the 'Poly'.
