Cleveland History

Cleveland is a city in the state of Ohio which has been subject to many historical events, much of this due to its geographical location. It is located on the banks of the Cuyahoga River and the shoreline of Lake Erie. There are so many water-ways and canals that make their way into the city.

On July 22 1796, the surveyors of the Connecticut Land Company demarcated and named the area on the banks on the Cuyahoga River as "Cleaveland" in honor of their leader Moses Cleaveland. It was he who first planned the town but unfortunately could not see further development. Other settlers came in and began the first trading in this region. A few years after this, in 1832, the Ohio and Erie Canal was made. This canal united the Ohio River to the Great Lakes and it defined the history of Cleveland by bringing in a lot of trade and settlements to the Village of Cleaveland. The booming trade in the region got the village connected by road and rail to the other cities and in 1836, Cleveland was incorporated as a city.

The city flourished in heavy industry (mainly steel and automobile) with raw materials being shipped to it via water means (the great lakes) and it got to be known as the best Rust Belt city. By 1920 it was, ranked the fifth largest and the best business location city producing steel and automobiles. Cleveland was the first to manufacture gasoline driven, steam driven and even electric cars. This growth of Cleveland continued despite economic depressions and the Second World War.

Like other cities, Cleveland too was affected badly by the Civil Rights Movement from 1955 to 1968. The city witnessed a lot of racial unrest and heavy loan debt. Even after the movement ended, Cleveland was unable to resolve its racial issues, debt situation and thereby reach the peak when the manufacturing industry boom was full fledged. Added to all this were other factors, the main being crime, inflation, Savings and Loans Crisis and recession. One thing after the other doomed the economy of Cleveland. By the 1980s, unemployment was at its peak owing to the closure of most of the steel and automobile manufacturing industries.

The 1990s saw a determination in the eyes of the Cleveland people and they decided to turn the economic tables of Cleveland. They decided to redevelop the city beginning from the downtown area and by making the best use of its waterfront for capital. Since then, there has been a slow and steady growth in the economy of the city. Today though there are sprouts of disturbances in the neighborhoods of Cleveland and still many troubles to be resolved; the city is economically secure and globally progressing.
