The area was almost completely uninhabited till Sam Bates and Green Russell struck gold near the mouth of Little Dry Creek in 1858. Soon thousands of people came seeking gold and the Gold rush started. The first settlement was called Montana City on the banks of the South Platte River. Montana City was later abandoned to start St. Charles City and Auraria in 1859.

General William Larimer, who was a land speculator from Kansas, staked a claim on a square mile on the hill near the intersection of Cherry Creek and the South Platte River just across the creek from Auraria. Larimer and his associates sold merchandise in the town in the hope that it would develop into a major city in time. Larimer named the city Denver to win the favour of James W. Denver who was the Kansas territorial governor in the hope that the city would become the seat of Arapaho County, Kansas. Unfortunately for Larimer, Denver had already resigned from his governor post, which he discovered only later.

As prospectors started finding the gold deposits in the area poor exhausted them and it seemed that Denver City would become a ghost town.
