Pittsburgh History

Pittsburgh is one of those cities which has a rich history. The history of Pittsburgh dates back to the Native American tribes (among them the Allegawis, Shawnee, and Hopewell). In 1669 a European explorer / trader called Robert de La Salle whose expedition down the Ohio River discovered the place. In 1749, Robert de La Salle's exploration brought in the French pioneers to the region with the expectation of uniting French dominated Canada with French Louisiana through the Ohio Rivers. When the British colonists came to know of the French occupancy, the next few years saw a lot of action packed drama in reality and in 1754 became one of the root causes of the French and Indian War. The British eventually won the war under the leadership of General John Forbes and it is he who named the settlement between the two rivers as Pittsburough.

From then on Pittsburgh had seen many wars between the Native tribes and the British. In 1768, the descendants of William Penn purchased most of the western lands that make the present Pittsburgh. Following this, there was a fight for this land between the states of Virginia and Pennsylvania and this was resolved only in 1785 when Pittsburgh was officially given to the state of Pennsylvania (the town was renamed to Town of Pittsburgh by Thomas Viceroy of Bedford County in 1784).

Pittsburgh's history marked a new milestone in 1812, when the supply of goods was cut and this stimulated the tapping of natural resources in Pittsburgh. And then there was no turning back. By 1815, Pittsburgh was producing large amounts of iron ore, brass, glass and tin. The Act of March 18 1816, the town of Pittsburgh got a city status. The following years saw the sprouting of many settlements, communities and by 1840, Pittsburgh was one of the largest industrial cities in the west of the Allegheny region.

The American Civil war boosted the production of Steel in Pittsburgh and by 1911; Pittsburgh was contributing to one third of the nation's steel. During the Second World War, Pittsburgh was producing around 95 million tons of steel. The steel industry boom brought in a lot of migrant settlers as well as a lot of pollution and smog. The authorities decided to take a firm step to cleaning the air and concentrate on building neighborhoods of Pittsburgh.

The economic slow down of the 1980s saw the closure of the steel industries and the city had to shift its economic focus to other domain industries like tourism, education, healthcare, financial services, information and advanced technology.

It is perhaps this die-hard spirit and quick adaptation against all odds that has made Pittsburgh develop even in the times of the recession in the 2000s. Today, the city of Pittsburgh is a proof of regeneration; it is economically strong and still succeeding.
