Long before the advent of the explorers to America, New Orleans was home to Native Americans who mainly depended on the Mississippi River for food and transport. In 1690, the first explorers to New Orleans were French Traders. They settled down and constructed St. Jean fort at the mouth of the bayou. In 1717 Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville, the French colonist formed "Nouvelle Orleans" in honor of Phillip II the then French Regent and Duke of Orleans. In 1722, it became the capital of the French Louisiana. Natural calamities forced so much of restricting of the city.

In 1762 the Treaty of Fontainebleau was signed stating the Mississippi river be given to the Spanish by the British in trade for Florida and Eastern part of the Mississippi river. 1795/96 saw the introduction of the Sugar mills and the opening of the Bayou St. John thereby opening the route for commerce and the economy of the city grew. In 1800 via the 3rd Treaty of San Ildefonso between the King of Spain and France saw the return of New Orleans to the French. In April 1803, Napoleon sold Louisiana to the United States by the famous Louisiana Purchase.

The city saw a lot of trade with the port providing accesses. The port also played an important role in the Slave Trade, as slaves were required to work in the plantations and other industries. The city was known to have the largest slave trade market then. Along with the slaves, there was the onset of other settlements into the region.

After the American Civil War (1815 to1865), and during the Reconstruction Era that made up the United States, in 1868, the Constitution granted Louisiana the voting rights and a governing body largely made up of blacks, took up esteemed position in the government offices. This growth continued and by 1960, the population reached a record high of that period. Racial fight for equality saw the downfall of the economy, increase in discrimination and crime.

While on one side the city fought for equality, on the other the city has struggled to keep its economy up, by introducing tourism as one of the city's focus. To add up to all this, the land was vulnerable to many natural calamities like floods etc. It was only by the late twentieth century that the scientists were able to understand the nature of the land.

Hurricane Katrina of 2005 ruined almost 80% percent of the city and left thousands of people homeless. Post Katrina, the city has slowly limped back into surety and the process of reconstruction is still on, this time with the knowledge of the land and major advances in technology, it is hoped that the city of New Orleans would be better and stronger. Although the city relies on trade to improve economy, it still strongly depends on tourism as a major source of income.
