Washington Demographics and Statistics

Washington, D.C., according to the 2010 United States Census, has a population of 0.6 million permanent residents. However the population of the district increases by about 70 percent on weekdays when the overall city population touches one million. Most people live in the states of Maryland and Virginia and only come to Washington D.C. to work.

Washington D.C. contains a high percentage of African-Americans, which make up more than 50 percent of the permanent population, while Caucasians make up 38 percent of the population. The rest of the population is a mixture of Asians, American Indians and other people from all over the world. More than 74,000 foreign immigrants live in Washington D.C., according to the census of 2007, the highest for a city in Untied States.
