Lynchburg History

Lynchburg was founded in the mid 1750s and was named after its explorer John Lynch son of Charles Lynch and Quake Sarah Clark Lynch. John Lynch started a ferry service on the River James so that people could travel to and from New London. The ferry service proved to be a vital system for trade and transport for several years. By the closing stages of the American Revolution, the village by the ferry system had itself become a major trade center. Then John thought the village had possibilities of it being reformed into a town and petitioned the Virginia General Assembly, the Assembly granted the charter in October 1786 and hence the town of Lynchburg was established.

When Lynchburg was established at the spot of Lynch's ferry system along the James river, the town became a major trading center for tobacco because the ferry made it more efficient to transport people and goods. By the 19th century, Lynchburg has turned itself into a center of commerce and manufacturer of tobacco and was among the richest towns in the U.S. based on its per capita. Major industries during this time were iron, steel and tobacco.

Later on in the 19th century, the economy of Lynchburg evolved into production and manufacturing resulting in making it one of the wealthiest towns in the U.S. The first cigarette rolling machine was invented by James Albert Bonsack, a resident of Lynchburg. Shortly after that, a pharmacological tinkerer and physician called Dr. Charles Browne Fleet introduced mass marketing. At this time Lynchburg was a preferred site for Shenandoah Valley Railroad and the Norfolk and Western Junction but the residents of Lynchburg refused the proposal as it would result in abundant pollution and noise hence the junction was later constructed in the City of Roanoke.

In September, 1870 Lynchburg experienced a flood that claimed to be the worst till date. The James river rose about 26 feet out of its banks resulting in massive damage that destroyed the bridges that were built across the river, gas pipelines across Blackwater creek, rail road sites in the river basin and a water pump house, leaving the city without water and electricity for many days. There were no bridges across the James river and yet another flood in 1877 destroyed the city creating havoc.

Lynchburg was then reconstructed and entered into a period of prosperity in the latter half of the 19th century. The canal system was replaced by the railroads as there was frequent damage created due to the floods. The population had also increased to 15,000 resulting in a new era.
